History of the iPhone
- 2007 Steve Job introduced his new product idea: the iPhone
- First iPhone was available in 4G and 8G with at the prices of $499 & $599.
- iPhone 3G was the second to launch and was the first one with 3G connect ability and available in black and white. I was made available at a lower price than the original iPhone.
- iPhone 3Gs came next with the same look at its predecessors but with faster connection.
- iPhone 4 was the first model to change from the original round shape to a more flat back with glass on both the front and back. The forward facing camera change the world with its selfie ability as well as the retina display.
- iPhone 4s was the newly updated version of the phone with new Siri ability.
- iPhone 5 was the second big redesign for the iPhone. A longer screen and lighter weight was the biggest feature of this model. This was the phone that changed the chargers as well as introduced FaceTime.
- iPhone C was introduced as a less expensive version of the 5. It was made available in a range of colors compared to the typical black and white.
- iPhone 5s added the finger touch home button and available in a new gold color.
- iPhone 6 & iPhone 6+ (latest) was the third redesign with an even lighter feel and back to the curved look. Both have significantly bigger screens than any iPhone in the past and has HD retina displays. Available in silver, gold, space gray, and rose gold.
-Although the iPad came a couple of years after the iPhone, Apple was actually looking at a tablet device before the idea of the iPhone was ever created.
-The first iPhone with its multi-touch display was unlike anything we had seen.

Why Consumers Buy Into iPhones
Contrary to popular belief, Apple does not have a marketing budget for iPhones. Apple products are used in commercials on television and other platforms used for advertising but these advertisements are not funded by Apple. Companies pay Apple to use their products in their advertising, giving Apple even more profits. Apple successfully uses an Exclusivity Technique in order to advertise their products. This technique is implemented by providing only a limited number of a product to customers. Apple has created an unbelievably high demand for iPhones since the first phone was released in 2009. The first iPhone was only available for one phone carrier and only sold in certain countries. As the hype for iPhones grew, the exclusivity did not. When a new iPhone is announced, consumers preorder the phone and sometimes camp outside the store to purchase the new phone before they are sold out. As Apple has released new models of the iPhone, they have slowly began making them available for more carriers and in different countries. Additional features on each new model draws customers in and creates a competitive market for having the newest iPhone. When a consumer with an old model of the iPhone is talking to a consumer with the latest iPhone, it creates a desire for the consumer with the old model to purchase the new phone. Their strategy is what makes the iPhone the best selling smartphone each year.
While Apple is focused on generating new models of the iPhone, the old models phase out. First generation iPhones are not seen anymore because they are not designed to last more than a couple years. The lifespan of iPhones are short which forces consumers to update their phone to the newest software available. Eventually when the old iPhone model can not be updated to the latest software the customer is forced into purchasing the newest and most expensive model available. When physical features of the phone advance the demand for the new model skyrocket such as the front facing camera. This is seen as a flaw from the perspective of consumers, but from the perspective of Apple, it is the way they are able to make consistent profits.
iPhones have become increasingly important to their user. All new technologies bring upon worries for the effects they will have. One worry applicable to iPhones is the dependency aspect. “smartphone users exhibit “nomophobia” when they happen to find themselves empty-handed–are a measure of utility as much as addiction” (Anonymous, 1). iPhones are becoming a staple to people’s wardrobe. No one ever leaves their house anymore without grabbing their iPhone first. The increased desire to be constantly connected to others is part of which creates this dependency. The plethora of information and entertainment that our iPhones provide to us is another reason we do not like to be without it.
Privacy is another worry smartphone users face. iPhones know a lot about their user and so do app vendors when an iPhone user downloads their app. App vendors often sell user’s personal information to companies without the user knowing. There are databases with information on every individual. Another factor of decreased privacy is the truth that, “The smartphone turns the person next to you into a potential publisher of your most private or embarrassing moments”(Anonymous, 1). Platforms for video entertainment such as Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook grow because people upload funny videos for pleasure. As college students who uses all three platforms, we am exposed to over hundreds of our friends personal lives through videos taken on their smartphones. Snapchat stories are put out by the user and typically consist of selfies of he or she doing something or videos of their friends doing funny things.
Lack of Social Interaction:
Due to the dependency of the iPhone that users have, we have also seen a decrease in social interaction between people since the iPhone has been evolving. Due to people constantly having to have their phones with them, it has interfered in normal day to day interactions. We now see families out to dinner that have little conversations with their children because their children are on their phones playing games, texting, or on social media. Going out with a friend to lunch isn’t the same anymore because friends are Snapchatting constantly throughout the lunch or having conversations with other people via text message. Just face-to-face interactions are so rare now because the iPhone is always apart of the conversation.
